Get your child ready for school

Although it is the middle of summer, it’s time to schedule appointments to get your child ready for school.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have designated August as National Immunization Awareness Month. As many of you may know, this have been a very controversial issue and, although the official position is that 1-there is no evidence that vaccinations have no medical problems and 2-they are critical for public health control of epidemics, officials are moving closer and closer towards compulsory vaccination. Get yourself informed on both sides of the matter.

I believe that vaccines may have benefits but about 10-15% of children may have metabolic problems with them, and therefore should be an issue of individual freedom of choice. If you decide to vaccinate, you can find the immunization schedule for birth to 6 years old here https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents/downloads/parent-ver-sch-0-6yrs.pdf and 7 to 18 years old here https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/downloads/teen/parent-version-schedule-7-18yrs.pdf.  For the other perspective, visit the National Vaccine Information Center site at http://www.nvic.org/.

August is also Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month and Children’s Vision and Learning Month. Having an eye exam before the school year begins can aid learning by detecting and correcting
• Albinism
• Allergies that affect the eyes
• Astigmatism
• Color blindness
• Crossed eyes or eyes that look outward
• Far sightedness
• Infections
• Lazy eye
• Nearsightedness

Protective gear should be ordered at this time for those who will be engaged in sports.
• Batting helmets for baseball
•  Eye guards for baseball, field hockey, football, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer
• Face shields and helmets for hockey
• Safety goggles for basketball and racquet sports

Now is also the time to draw up a plan to help the student who has been diagnosed with blindness or visual impairment. This plan may include
• Assistive technology
• Use of contrasting colors like black on white or white on green
• Access to larger images and/or printed (versus blackboard) material
• A more ideal seating placement
• Tutoring help
• Being allowed extra time for assignments and test

Also schedule an appointment with your homeopath to make sure your child’s entire body is functioning as it should. Health and wholeness get your child ready for school and help him/her succeed throughout the school year.
