Asthma Awareness Month

May is Asthma Awareness Month, a good time to become aware of how homeopathic remedies can work for asthma. If you have acute symptoms, it is best for you to go to the emergency room (ER) for conventional care. Though noted in the homeopathic literature, there is no modern research proving the effects of homeopathy during asthma attacks, though they may be helpful during those instances.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, asthma does not discriminate. It affects
• 8.6% of children and 7.4% of adults
• 9% of women and 6.3% of men
• 9.9% of the black population, 7.6% of those who are ethnically white, 6.7% of  the Hispanic populace

You need to be aware of what triggers cause asthma episodes for you or a loved one. It could be
• Air pollution
• Allergies
• Anger
• Anxiety
• Bronchitis
• Burning wood
• Certain foods and food additives
• Changes in weather
• Cleaning solvents
• Cold air
• Colds
• Crying
• Dust
• Exercise
• Exhaust from vehicles
• Fear
• Flu viruses
• Getting chilled
• Heartburn
• Humidity
• Infections
• Laughing too hard
• Medications
• Perfume
• Sinusitis
• Smoking
• Stress
• Tobacco smoke
• Yelling

Which homeopathic remedies can help?
Antimony tart (rattling breathing and coughing with difficult expectoration)
Arsenicum album (shortness of breath with anxiety and fear of being alone)
Hepar sulph (difficult breathing with hoarse cough and thick yellow-green mucus)
Ipeca (paroxysmal coughing with gagging and difficulty breathing)
Kali  carbonicum (waking up, having to sit up in bed to be able to breath)
Magnesia phosphorica  (spasmodic, paroxysmal, dry cough, with muscle spasms)
Pulsatilla (for asthma and other respiratory problems, with weepiness and longing for affection)

Your homeopath will know which remedies best match your particular needs. These studies also provide hopeful results.

Clinical verification in homeopathy and allergic conditions” was published in Homeopathy in January 2013. Author Michel Van Wassenhoven reported positive results in randomized controlled trials for homeopathic treatment of asthma and hay fever. He also noted that Quality of Life questionnaires indicated childhood asthma, allergic symptoms, and skin diseases improved with homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy was also viewed as an economical treatment option for allergies, asthma, eczema, and rhinitis. Finally, he duplicated the successful treatment of allergic conditions with homeopathic remedies among his own patients.

Efficacy of homeopathy in childhood asthmas” appeared in Homeopathics Links in Summer 2007. Author G. R. Mohan reported after 2 years of homeopathic treatment for 81 asthmatic children who had not responded to conventional treatment. Some control was achieved by 21%, 60.5% achieved control, and 12.3% did not respond to homeopathic treatment. The most frequently used remedies were Antimony tart, Arsenicum album, Arsenicum iod, Calc carb, Hepar sulph, Merc solubilis, and Pulsatilla.

Estudio retrospectivo multicentrico de una serie de 196 pacientes con bronquitis asmatica con tratamiento homeopatico” [“Retrospective study in asthma”] was published in Revista Homeopatica in 1998. Anna Pla i Castellsague and Carmen Maria Sturza noted that 54 of the 196 people treated with homeopathy claimed to be cured and another 117 showed distinct improvement.
