When should homeopathic remedies be taken?

Should homeopathic remedies be taken before, during, after, or instead of conventional medicines? The choice to use homeopathy is yours. Consult your homeopath for timing and dosage.

André Saine, Dean of the Canadian Academy of Homeopathy, president of the Quebec Association of Naturopathic Medicine, and a practicing naturopathic doctor who specializes in homeopathy, emphasizes that choosing homeopathy instead of or in addition to conventional medicine is an individual choice. Take the time to study the potential homeopathy has for you and those you love. Consult with a professionally trained homeopath, preferably a licensed healthcare provider. Weigh your, and your practitioner’s, biases and beliefs and then make an informed decision.

Many homeopaths, especially in Europe and South America, are medical school graduates. Some homeopaths, like myself, are licensed to practice general medicine and are board certified in a medical specialty, and often teach undergraduates, graduates, medical students at major universities, and the public. All around the world, scientifically-trained physicians who have adopted homeopathy use ALL their knowledge to cure people, weighing the pros and cons of each approach. Their goal is to help and cause no harm.

Homeopathy treats the whole person over a lifetime, making the individual less susceptible to illness and infections over time. This is one of the blind spots of conventional research, which is done in a short time period. The long- term benefits are often not absolutely clear until months of treatment have occurred for chronic conditions. Conventional medicine treats symptoms and then may also have to deal with the side effects produced by pharmaceutical drugs. The first method is curative, the second reactive.

Given a choice, physicians actually prefer tested therapies that are gentle and without side effects. Homeopathic remedies are gentle but cannot be tested like many conventional medicines with the usual research protocol. Those have to be modified to adapt the individualized characteristics of the real-life homeopathic treatment, treating the whole person with their unique characteristics – not every person with arthritis or asthma is the same and may need a different homeopathic medicine. Conventional pharmaceuticals, though well tested most times, often have a plethora of side effects. This is why you must make a choice of if/when to take homeopathic remedies.

My philosophy is that the process of healing occurs when an individual is given an environment with the factors that maximize one’s innate abilities to cure oneself. The optimum environment is created through proper food, respiration, emotional, psychological and spiritual elements, and, at times, the use of supplements and medicines when the body is not able to continue the healing process without aid.

I can help you identify which homeopathic remedies will best suit you and whether they should be taken before, during, after, or instead of treatment with conventional medicines. These vary case by case and remedy by remedy so please do not attempt to treat yourself.

You should also consult with your medical team about
• Making healthy food choices
• Adding aerobic exercise to your daily routine at least 5x per week
• Paying closer attention to your breathing and mental well-being
• Choosing daily activities that nurture your spirit
• Getting enough rest
so whatever remedy you choose has the best opportunity for success.
